It’s early February and it is still a good time to go to Tagaytay to have a fresh cool breeze. We decided to go there and went to try Balay Dako.
Balay Dako is one of the Antonio’s groups of restaurants which serve native Filipino food. It was actually a big house which was meant to become a gathering place for family and friends to celebrate significant and memorable events.
We arrived at around 1PM, but people are still waiting for seats. We are queued at number 62 and the seat number that was called is just 30+. We still waited because there is a huge coach there and the breeze is cool so we didn’t mind. Waiting time is around 1 hour because the place is huge and can accommodate many guests.
LUMPIANG SARIWA (Php 185)
The fresh spring roll is filled with heart of coconut, shrimp and ground pork.
KANSI (Php 460)
Kansi is an Ilonggo favorite often described as a cross between sinigang and bulalo. It comes with beef brisket, pork leg, lemongrass, finger chilies and langka.
TINTANG PUSIT NA KANIN (Php 370)
The serving for this is very worth it. But I wouldn’t recommend it. I still prefer white rice or garlic rice, which compliments the other dishes.
GINATAANG KALABASA (Php 260)
CRISPY PATA (Php 780)
The lechon na baboy wasn’t available when we are ordering (around 2pm). 🙁 You have to be early if you want to try this. We opt for the crispy pata instead. The meat is brined overnight with salt, ginger, lemongrass and bay leaf for better flavor and texture. This is why is appears to be pinkish in color but is very tender and flavorful.
PANCIT NI ANTONIO (Php 450)
This one is a Balay favorite. The rice noodle is stir fried in annatto oil with chorizo, shrimp, chicken and pork slices. The bottom part could get greasy because of the annatto oil.
INASAL CHICKEN- PAA & PECHO (Php 170 each)
It doesn’t look that appetizing but the chicken is juicy and savory.
INIHAW NA PUSIT (Php 390)
HALO HALO KLASIKO ( Php 175)
HALO HALO NI ANTONIO (Php 210)
This one is a Thai twist halo halo. It comes with Macapuno sorbet served with suman sa gata, langka, pinipig, water chesnuts, sticky rice dumplings, kaong, toasted peanuts and corn. This was a bit pricey and the taste is just ordinary. I still prefer the classic halo halo.
PIYAYA
This is very tempting to order because you can see the chef cooking it in the center and people are waiting in line to order this one. One order is 6 pcs and it reminded me of a big hopia. I don’t usually like piyaya that can be bought outside because it is very thick. Balay’s version is thin and warm. Just the way we like it!
FINAL VERDICT:
Balay Dako is nice for family gatherings because of the wide tables and servings that are good for sharing. The best seats are on the side, having the view of Taal.

CRISTINA JOSE
Hi this is Cristina Jose I would like to make a reservation on Saturday (May 13) for dinner between 5 and 6 for 8 people. Please confirm. Thank you.
Diane
Hi Cristina! you should call the restaurant for table bookings or inquiries. Base on their website, they do not take table reservations as they have a first come first served policy. They only accept reservations for certain function areas (with respective consumable fees). You can still try to reach them at : +63.925.584.1655 / +63.917.116.6710
or send them an email at [email protected].
Base on my experience, we just walk in, queued and waited for our seats. Better arrive early morning.
Enjoy!
