Katsu craze here in Manila has dodged a little compare to few years back when Yabu, Saboten and all other katsu houses suddenly opened. Though the waiting lines are much shorter, they surely hit the Filipino crowd as there are times when we feel like craving for tonkatsu.
Kimukatsu is the most famous pork cutlet restaurant in Japan, with multiple locations in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama and Senda. The secret to their popularity is the combination of crispy, texture-rich batter surrounding a juicy, flavorful 25-layered select pork cutlet.
They also serve unlimited rice, miso soup and cabbage. They have four dressing to choose from.
Wasabi, Spicy, Soy & Vinegar and Goma dressing
You have the option of white or red miso. I prefer the white miso, which though has a milder taste but is more flavorful than the red miso which is on the salty side.
Unlimited rice
They say that this is not any ordinary Tonkatsu, this is Kimukatsu. It’s the only restaurant in the world that offers 25 layers of mille-feuille Katsu in multiple flavors.
They have seven flavors to choose from: Black Pepper, Garlic, Negi Shio (marinated spring onion), Cheese, Ume Shiso (popular amongst females in Japan), Yuzu Kosyo (yuzu fruits and green chili pepper) and Plain.
We ordered for the cheese flavor because it’s their best seller and we love cheese!!
The outstanding taste comes from their unique bread crumbs and the juicy pork cutlet in every bite!
They also have new creamy katsu flavors: Creamy Pesto, Mushroom Wafudashi and Creamy Spinach
CREAMY SPINACH
Kimukatsu knows how to set apart from other katsu places. They try to be unique in presenting their pork cutlet. Because they are fried, the idea of adding cream goes perfectly well to balance the taste.
CREAM CRAB CROQUETTE
I still prefer Saboten’s croquette because they are creamier. But if you want the strong smell of crab, you should order this!
FINAL VERDICT:
Overall, I love how Kimukatsu innovates and adds flavor to their juicy layered pork cutlet. In general, tonkatsu alone can sometimes have the “umay” feeling. But in Kimukatsu, they have different varieties to choose from! Try their creamy new flavors. They are the best!
